Anna Herland is an Associate Professor at Department of Micro and Nanosystems at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan and Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet (Sweden). She has a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Linköping Universitet (Sweden) and did her postdoc at Karolinska Institutet in stem cell engineering. She was a visiting researcher and leader of the subgroup of neural in vitro models with Donald Ingber at Harvard University (USA). Her current research group focuses on creating microphysiological models of tissue, especially the central nervous system. She develops human primary and stem cell-derived systems combined with microfluidics and 3D culture. For real-time assessment of biological functions in microphysiological systems, she implements bioelectronic stimuli and read-outs in Organ-on-Chips. She has also focused on improving pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modelling in Organ Chips to create better translation of in vitro predictions to the in vivo patient parameters.
